Welcome, friends and truth seekers, to the Black Humanists and Non-Believers of Sacramento (BHNBS) website! We’re thrilled to have you here and can’t wait to share the vibrant community we’ve built.
BHNBS is a dedicated meetup community that provides a welcoming space for Black individuals who identify as humanists, atheists, agnostics, or skeptics. We’re committed to promoting humanist values and social justice for everyone. We engage in critical discussions about religion, spirituality, and the role of secularism in the Black community.
Our group actively participates in community service and advocates for social issues disproportionately affecting Black and marginalized communities. We aim to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where members can explore and express their non-religious beliefs while working towards a more equitable society.
Our Book Club
One of our most important initiatives and activities is the Black Humanist Book Club. The book club has been a cornerstone of our community since its inception. We explore predominantly non-fiction works that focus on Black history, social justice, science, and religion from atheist perspectives. Our discussions thrive on each member’s viewpoints, creating a rich, engaging dialogue. Even those who haven’t had the opportunity to finish the assigned reading can still participate in the conversations, which may encourage them to read and prepare for the next discussion.
The book club discussions are not just about reading and discussing books but also about having fun. They provide a relaxed and enjoyable way to discuss issues, ideas, and insights rarely discussed in other spaces.
Book discussions can enhance understanding, improve communication skills, foster critical thinking, increase reading motivation, expose members to diverse genres and authors, provide social connections, offer learning opportunities, and promote personal growth.
Other Activities
Beyond book club discussions, we meet bi-monthly for morning breakfasts and other local meetups and events. These activities provide a relaxed and enjoyable time to talk, catch up with one another, and brainstorm ideas and plans.
We’re excited to welcome you to our community. Whether you’re interested in joining our book club, participating in our meetups, or simply learning more about humanism and social justice, there’s a place for you here. We look forward to getting to know you and working together to promote humanist values and social justice in our community.
Welcome to the Black Humanists and Non-Believers of Sacramento. We’re glad you’re here.
